William Rowan Hamilton was an Irish mathematician, astronomer, and physicist. He was appointed the Andrews Professor of Astronomy at Trinity College Dublin and the director of the Dunsink Observatory. He worked on Fourier analysis, geometrical optics and quaternions, contributing greatly to modern linear algebra and theoretical physics.
